In order to graduate, you must bring the form "Petition to Graduate," along with a signed copy of your psychology program plan, to the Registrar before the deadline set for your graduation semester.
This form is available on the Registrar's web site, www.fit.edu/registrar
The program plan on the Psychology department's computer system that we use for advising is presented to the Registrar along with the Petition to Graduate. Your advisor must go over the program plan, filling in all of your current courses as well as additional courses that you will take in order to complete your degree. Because the program plan may contain errors, your advisor will submit it to a departmental secretary to compare to the university's computer system ("Banner") on which official records are maintained. This is called a "graduation checkout."
The deadlines for submitting your Petition to Graduate come up very early during the semester prior to the one in which you hope to graduate. These deadlines are on various university calendars, including online.
Because you must meet with your advisor and he/she must ask a secretary for a graduation checkout, you must make an appointment with your advisor one or two weeks ahead of the submission deadline.
The Registrar will perform a graduation checkout and send you a letter indicating its results. A perfect letter will list your current courses and list the courses you plan to take in your last semester. It might also list courses you've taken that were not needed. An imperfect letter will indicate that you are still missing some courses and you cannot graduate. In the latter case, see your advisor immediately. 99% of the cases like this involve a failure to communicate and can be cleared up with some paperwork. |
