Center for the Study of Critical Languages
The study of languages is an essential component to achieving excellence in all technological areas in the 21st Century. In 2009, the Department of Humanities & Communication established its Center for the Study of Critical Languages (CSCL). The CSCL is the department's hub for the study and instruction of:
(a) critical languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese;
(b) traditional modern languages, including Spanish, French, German and Italian; and
(c) English as a Second / New Language
The CSCL will utilize the most up-to-date technological equipment and methodologies to deliver language instruction at Florida Tech.
Majors in technological, scientific, business, communication areas, among others, can avail themselves of the opportunity to increase their job market desirability by adding linguistic and cultural competence in critical languages.
The CSCL began its offerings in earnest when the Department of Humanities and Communication received a grant from the National Security Education Program, Institute of International Education, ROTC Language and Culture Project - " Project GO", to support the CSCL. The program focused on the study of Chinese language and culture in AY 2009-2010, was led by Dr. Robert Taylor, Department Head; Dr. Alan Rosiene, Director, ESL; and Dr. JoAnn Parla - Palumbo, Director, CSCL. During AY 2009 - 2010, Dr.Wanfa Zhang offered courses in Beginning Chinese, and in spring 2010, Dr. Gordon Patterson offered a course in Chinese History and Culture. The highlight of the summer 2010 CSCL session was the Intensive Summer Institute in Chinese Language and Culture, which was open to Florida Tech ROTC cadets and other cadets from colleges throughout the nation. The institute was highly successful, and will be continued in a more inclusive model.
No longer restricted to offering its programs to ROTC cadets, courses offered through the CSCL are open to all students at the University as well as dual enrolled students, qualified high school students, and members of the community. Usual procedures and costs/fees apply to the programs and courses offered by the CSCL.
Courses to increase students’ cultural knowledge and awaremeness of globaization are offered every summer. These courses are offered in an “intensive model,” affording participants the opportunity to acquire compentency in language and culture in their chosen area of study.
